| PAWS / Ashmel Superspar RHINO RUN / WALK – 12 April 2014 |
The PAWS / AshmelSuperspar Run/Walk was held at Mpongo Private Game Reserve outside East London on 12 April 2014. The event consisted of a 5km walk as well as 10 and 20km runs for the more energetic and the weather was perfect ( >30C ). Both the runs and the walk took participants ( 419 in total ) through the park, which was being monitored at all times by experienced rangers, and we're glad to say that, apart from a few minor scrapes and falls ( and dehydration ), there were no serious incidents. Feedback from many of the participants ( some international ) was positive, with many promising to bring family and friends next year ( we will have lots more water next time ).
Funds raised from the event were donated to Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, for the rehabilitation of injured rhino, as well as their Wild Dog project. We are aiming to assist their animal hospital with much needed equipment, as well as to further our awareness campaign in regard to the plight of our wildlife. With 419 rhino having been poached to date in 2014, this certainly needs a lot of focus.
